History[]
Themistocles (Greek: Θεμιστοκλῆς; 524–459 BC) was an Athenian politician, general, and naval strategist. He was one of 10 Athenian generals in Battle of Marathon, and uniquely born as a commoner. As a politician, he was famous for his naval policies. He had always advocated for a strong Athenian navy during his political career.
He persuaded the Athenians to invest their income from silver mines in a war fleet of 200 Triremes. A key figure during the Persian Wars, he commanded the victorious Athenian navy at the decisive battle of Salamis in 479 BC. Later, he pursued an active policy against the Persians in the Aegean, laying the foundations of future Athenian power.
Due to jealousy, however, numerous politicians began plotting against him. Ostracized by the Athenians, he was forced to flee to the protection of the Persians.
