The Athenians represent the City-State of Athens and the allies influenced by them. As the forebearers of Athenian democracy and philosophy, they are the least war driven of all the Hellenistic factions - although the combination of their economic and military potential makes them very formidable with a selection of units.
History[]
As the cradle of Western civilization and the birthplace of democracy, Athens was famed as a center for the arts, learning and philosophy. The Athenians were also powerful warriors, particularly at sea. At his peak, Athens dominated a large part of the Hellenic world for several decades.
Athens is named after Atenea, or Athena, protector goddess and daughter of Zeus. Its first settlements were occupied by Ionians, and at their center the Acropolis was founded. According to mythology, Athens' founder and first king was Cecropes, an Egyptian; the local hero Theseus then unified the polis under Athens' control, after submitting the neighbor Eleusis.
After the monarchy, came an aristocratic organization and then democracy: its first seeds came when, in the VIII century BC, Athens was ruled by an elective monarchy, organized by the oligarchy and made by nine members, chosen every year by the descendants of those who unified Attica. The first legislator was Draco, whom in 621 BC wrote a law system; his successor Solon, noted for his honesty and patriotism and made archon in 594, made new concessions to lower classes: limited the family leader's power, created the Boule, a council formed by 400 members, and founded the people's tribunal of the Eliea. Solon was succeded by Pisistratos, a tyrant who enriched Athens, and his sons were even more tyrannical. But in the end, in 508 BC, Cleisthenes conceded citizenship to all free men, giving way to Athen's definitive political organization. Under Cleisthenes, the Boule was expanded and the ecclesia (the people's assembly) integred even Athenian citizens who were born elsewhere, while ostracism was founded as a procedure to exile anyone who was considered too powerful.
The V century saw Athens' rise to glory and fall from grace. The Acropolis was rebuilt, and the Temple of Nike, the Erechtheion and even the Parthenon. Horewer, it was also a great century of war. It all started when the Ionian cities on the Anatolian coast rebelled against the Achaemenid Persians thanks to Athens; after quelling the rebellion, the Persian King Darius I retaliated by invading Greece, only to be defeated by Miltiades at Marathon. His son Xerxes I, who invaded Greece as well, was more successful: after defeating the Spartans at the Thermopilae, he destroyed the Athenian Acropolis; he was horewer defeated as well, by the Athenian fleet of Themistocles at Salamis and the Spartan army of Pausanias at Platea, in 480 BC.
Athens' most famous politician was Pericles: under him, democracy became even more powerful, as the theoricon (free spectacles for the plebs) was established and the city was made even richer, more decorated and more populous (in the same V century, 250.000 people inhabited the city). The fleet grew even more powerful, especially as a way to counter Sparta's prominency. Athens' confederate cities, horewer, started to doubt its power: Samo rebelled first in 440, then Thebes, Megara, Korinthos and finally Sparta, with whom it would fight the Peloponnesian War (431-401 BC). The first years saw Athens being struck by a plague, of which a quarter of its inhabitants died, including Pericles himself. Another hard blow was a failed invasion in Sicily, where Athens was to conquer Syracuse, another ally of Sparta. The Lakedemonians themselved strenghtened their fleet thanks to a deal with the Persians, and in the last year of war defeated Athens at Aegospotami.
Athens was thus reduced to a government of the Thirty Tyrants, which luckily ended after just eight years with the birth of another, short-lived Confederation. After a decline in the IV century, Athens was then defeated at Chaeronea by Philip II, King of Macedonia, and was to submit to him; Philip's son, Alexander III, quelled the city revolt.
Alexander's death marked the beginning of the Hellenistic period, where Athens was the main center of arts and science. Athens would soon submit to Rome in 146 BC (the same year of the sack of Korinth and the destruction of Carthage); it would then rebel in 88 BC thanks to Mithridates VI Eupator of Pontus, only to be sacked by the bloody general Sulla. And still Athens kept being a learning center, so much that it culturally conquered Rome despite being their subordinate. It would even share its fate in the barbarian invasions from III century onwards despite joining the Eastern Roman Empire in 395 AD.
Civilization Traits[]
- Athenians have access to all the naval technologies including several special unique ones and a civilization bonus that specifically decreases their ship construction times, and a moderately powerful and effective navy much like all Hellenistic factions.
- Athenian Infantry are fairly well armored and versatile, with effective citizen solider spearmen and skirmishers along with specialist late game champion units and having access to the powerful Phalanx formation for melee infantry.
- Although lacking in the Battering Ram, they possess effective siegecraft with Stone Throwers and Bolt Shooters along with their upgrades.
- Well rounded Cavalry, with access to very effective raiding cavalry to harass enemy support units and chase down weak and vulnerable infantry.
- Athenian Walls are some of the best available, with strong stone walls and wall towers that can fire on enemy troops while also with a special technology allowing them to be built and extended into neutral territory.
Civilization Bonuses[]
